Multidisciplinarity and cognitive science

چکیده

The aim of Schunn, Crowley and Okada’s (1998) study is to address the question of whether the current state of cognitive science, as represented by Cognitive Science and the Cognitive Science Society, “reflects the multidisciplinary ideals of its foundation.” To properly interpret and respond to their results, we need to ask a prior question: What is cognitive science’s multidisciplinary ideal? There are at least two conceptions—a “localist” conception, which seems to be implicit in Schunn, Crowley and Okada’s discussion, and a “holist” conception. I argue that while both have been endorsed by some cognitive scientists, there are reasons for preferring the holist conception. I then consider what Schunn, Crowley and Okada’s findings tell us about the state of cognitive science in light of a holist approach and report on an analysis of the journal’s contents which looks at the domain, subdomain, and cognitive capacity investigated. © 2001 Cognitive Science Society, Inc. Multidisciplinarity: by fiat or need? Stressing the need for more multidisciplinary approaches to tackle scientific problems is always a safe position to take during discussions on the future of the biological sciences. Research Collaborations in Multidisciplinary Institutions: a Case Study of iSchools

Although closely related, multidisciplinarity and interdisciplinarity are different. The former indicates the co-existence of multiple disciplines while the latter is more about the integration among various areas. As collaboration between researchers from different areas is one of the major approaches for interdisciplinarity, this research investigated whether higher levels of multidisciplinar...

Interdisciplinarity in nursing education and research.

Multidisciplinarity differs from interdisciplinarity in regards to the level of mutual interaction assumed by the different disciplines involved. In multidisciplinarity, the disciplines work together while preserving their independence; in other words, the limits of the disciplines are preserved. In interdisciplinarity, there is a strong interdependence and each discipline uses a similar or the...
